tatement-making accessories are always in style, especially big, shiny cocktail rings. The first time I met accessories designer Silvana Costa, she was sporting a massive brushed gold saucer with a slice of pearl on her finger. I have no shame asking people where they got their coveted jewels, and Costa's reply was that she had made it. I had to try my hardest not to tear the ring right off her finger. Costa has been has been designing for her label, Wicked Peacock Designs, for two years. Her delicate toppers and bridal headpieces incorporate feathers, flowers, and vintage beads. I like her veiled headbands best. Be sure to check out the Wicked Peacock look book, which features stunning photography by Laura Parent.
The Medford-based accessories designer is not afraid to wear something "a little out there," and has fiery style for a Bostonian. (She can't live without her black-stitched, vintage Tennesee high-heeled, gold-tipped cowgirl boots.) Her motto: I peacock, therefore I am.
When I ran into Costa recently at a friend's craft night, she was busily sorting through a tray of vintage beads, whipping up rhinestone-encrusted stunners and enamel brooches, which she promptly pinned on fellow crafters. The girl has a natural talent for turning '80s clip-on earrings into baubles you would actually wear.
Wicked Peacock can be found at Davis Squared in Somerville (whose owner, Melissa Christie, Costa credits with inspiring her to market her work) and Cibeline on Charles Street.
